ISO Archiving Standards - First UK Workshop
September 10, 1997
BNSC HQ

Hosted by
BNSC
in cooperation with
CCSDS
and
ISO
The purpose of this seminar is to disseminate information to
UK industry and UK governmental institutions about archival
information systems standards that are currently developed under
the auspices of the Committee on Space Data Systems- Panel 2
(CCSDS P2) and the ISO.
The presentations given are centred around the following
issues:
- a reference model for an Open Archival Information
System (OAIS). The CCSDS P2 has been tasked by the
ISO to develop a reference model that can be used as
framework for the understanding of archival concepts
needed for long-term preservation of information. This
model will also facilitate the description and comparison
of architectures of existing and future systems and guide
the production of related ISO standards in this area.
- Information Access Standards. Important elements
of any OAIS are the standards related to the access of
the information stored in the archives. In the seminar
current important standards and European systems in this
area are presented.
- the Catalogue Interoperability Protocol (CIP). The
CIP is an advanced search and retrieval client/server
protocol based on Z39.50. The CCSDS P2 currently
considers the publication of the CIP as a P2
recommendation.
- demonstrations of tools related to data archiving,
distribution and access.
